The Importance of Regular Dental Visits

Monday, October 10, 2011
We all know it is important to keep up with our dental care; brushing twice daily, flossing, etc., but most people stop there.  Just because you are following the right steps at home, does not mean you should only see the dentist when something severe happens, it is important to keep regular dental visits.

There are two ends of the scale to look at when discussing the importance of regular dental visits. On one end maintaining a regular dental check up can insure that any potential serious dental issues are quickly identified and soon treated before they can result into a more painful or threatening problem.  By catching something potential early, this can save from highly expensive, medical issues that could require surgery or other treatment options, as well as save you from conditions that could be life threatening such as oral cancers.  Oral cancers can be highly curable if caught early on.

On a lesser side of the scale regular visits and dental cleanings can prevent disorders such as tooth decay and gum disease.  Tooth decay is one of the most common of all disorders, only coming in second to the common cold.  It does not just affect children and teens eating too much sugar, is can affect any people of any age.

Beyond the significance of a patient’s health, but also important when considering regular check ups, are more superficial reasons such as whiter teeth and reduced bad breath.  With regular visits to your dentist you can get your teeth cleaned of plaque and stains that brushing may not be able to fight, producing a whiter smile.  In addition, you will avoid tooth decay that causes the onset of bad breath.

Even though they seem like a pain, regular visits in addition to good at home dental hygiene will save you from not only yellow teeth and bad breath, but threatening diseases and future hassle.
